Yale trailed 2-0 to RPI on Saturday night with fewer than 3 minutes to play, and managed to pull off a 3-2 overtime victory. Frankie DiChiara's power-play goal with 2:59 remaining began the rally. John Hayden tied it on an extra-attacker, power-play goal with 19 seconds left in regulation, then won it with another power-play goal 23 seconds into overtime.
Here's Yale's official hockey schedule for next season.

Yale has a couple of tweaks in the schedule. Keith Allain prefers opening with an Ivy opponent due to the late start date mandated by the league, only this year it's a scrimmage with both Brown and Princeton (games at Princeton.) Sacred Heart is the official season-opener a week later.

Also, there was some haggling with Providence, which owed the Bulldogs a return game for last season's meeting at Schneider Arena, to find a date that worked for both teams. At the 11th hour, they settled on Jan. 10.

The University of Ottawa fills the annual Christmas week exhibition, a slot filled by the Russian Red Stars for several seasons until they stopped touring last year. And the Quinnipiac games are once again at season's end, Feb. 4 at Yale, Feb. 24 in Hamden.

This was just released by Jack Montague's lawyer.

STATEMENT OF MAX STERN, COUNSEL FOR JACK MONTAGUE

Boston, MA – March 14, 2016 –

Jack Montague was expelled
from Yale University on February 10, 2016 after a panel of the Yale
University-Wide Committee found that he had unconsented-to sex 15 months
earlier, in October 2014, with a female student who is currently a junior
at Yale. He was expelled during the second semester of his senior
year.

Last week, the media widely
reported on statements made by Yale students and posters put up on campus
which condemned Jack Montague directly as the named culprit and as a
rapist, thus slandering him with this accusation. He was never
accused of rape and Yale took no steps to correct these actions.
As a result, Mr. Montague has no choice but to correct the record.

The University hired an
independent investigator to investigate this matter and, as reported
by her, the facts
not in dispute and as stated in the female student’s account
are these:

The two students developed
a relationship that led to them sleeping together in Jack’s room on
four occasions in the fall of 2014.

On the first occasion,
the woman joined Jack in bed and stayed the night.

On the second occasion,
she entered his bed voluntarily, removed all of her clothes and, during
the night, woke him to perform oral sex.

On the third occasion,
she joined him in bed, voluntarily took off all her clothing, and they
had sexual intercourse by consent.

On the fourth occasion,
she joined him in bed, voluntarily removed all of her clothes, and they
had sexual intercourse. Then they got up, left the room and went
separate ways. Later that same night, she reached out to him to
meet up, then returned to his room voluntarily, and spent the rest of
the night in his bed with him.

The sole dispute is as
to the sexual intercourse in the fourth episode. She stated that
she did not consent to it. He said that she did.

A year later she reported
the incident to a Title IX coordinator. A Title IX official –
not her – filed a formal complaint with the University-Wide Committee.

Only two persons could
have known what happened on that fourth night. The panel chose
to believe the woman, by a “preponderance of the evidence.”
We believe that it defies logic and common sense that a woman would
seek to re-connect and get back into bed with a man who she says forced
her to have unwanted sex just hours earlier. And yet the Dean
accepted this conclusion and ordered Jack to be expelled. His
decision was then upheld by the Provost.

We strongly believe that
the decision to expel Jack Montague was wrong, unfairly determined,
arbitrary, and excessive by any rational measure. Yale has been
oblivious to the catastrophic and irreparable damage resulting from
these allegations and determinations. The expulsion not only deprives
Jack of the degree which he was only three months short of earning,
but has simultaneously destroyed both his educational and basketball
careers.

We cannot help but think
it not coincidental that the decision by Yale officials to seek expulsion
of the captain of its basketball team followed by little more than a
month the report of the Association of American Universities (AAU) which
was highly critical of the incidence of sexual assault on the Yale campus,
and the Yale President’s promise, in response, to “redouble our
efforts.” From what appears, Jack has been pilloried as a “whipping
boy” for a campus problem that has galvanized national attention.

There is no doubt that
institutions of higher learning must take the problem of sexual abuse
seriously and take effective steps to protect its women students.
But that obligation cannot justify imposing so drastic a punishment
on the basis of such flimsy evidence.

Mr. Montague intends to
sue Yale University to vindicate his rights.

The All-American defenseman will miss this weekend's series at Colgate and Cornell after a game disqualification penalty issued on Saturday night against Harvard.

The league made the decision on Monday. There was a delay in the announcement as the league reviewed Yale's appeal.

"We've spent the last couple of days fighting with the league over this one," Yale coach Keith Allain said prior to Wednesday's practice at Ingalls Rink. "My suggestion is you should probably watch the video of the vicious hit (O'Gara) took and come to your own conclusions."

In the third period of Yale's 2-1 victory over the Crimson, O'Gara was sent head-first into the boards by Harvard's Sean Malone. O'Gara remained on the ice for several seconds holding his head. No penalty was called. When he staggered to his feet, he turned to see Malone charging toward him. The two collided, each knocking the other back a step, before O'Gara hit Malone across the side of his head with his stick.

Referees issued O'Gara a 5-minute major and game disqualification.

O'Gara, a Boston Bruins draft pick, is known as one of the top shutdown defensemen in the nation. Yale had been the least penalized team in the country leading into the Harvard game (they're now the fifth least-penalized.) O'Gara had taken eight penalties for 16 minutes in 22 previous games, and doesn't have a history or reputation as a dirty player.

"None whatsoever," Allain said. "Rob's a terrific young man. He's an asset to our university; an asset to our hockey program. We'll miss him, but we have to figure out how to win without him. That's our job right now."
sports world, but it’s about to get a deal worthy of the Power Five.

Yale and sportswear giant Under Armour signed a long-term
partnership that will outfit the athletic program for the next decade.
The deal, expected to be announced Monday, is the first exclusive shoe,
apparel and equipment contract in school history.

Under Armour, which famously outfits Maryland and Notre Dame,
recently overtook Adidas as the second-largest sports apparel company in
the United States and was on track to earn $4 billion in net revenue
for 2015. Word is it was anxious to crack into the Ivy League, and more
specifically, Yale.

Terms of the deal aren’t likely to be made public, but sources
say it’s a 10-year contract is worth in the neighborhood of $16 million,
making it higher in annual value than current Nike deals for Big 10
conference members Illinois and Rutgers.

It’s a major coup for Yale, especially since a portion of the
contract will be paid in cash to help boost the school’s annual
operations budget. No official word yet, but expect more TV broadcasts,
more big-name opponents in New Haven and, perhaps, Under
Armour-sponsored hockey and basketball tournaments.

One thing loyal Yale fans and alums needn’t worry about is
tradition. Maryland, Texas Tech and even Navy allowed Under Armour to
make wild changes to uniform color schemes and football helmets. But the
university isn’t interested in radical revamps. So breathe easy. Yale
Blue is untouchable.
All seven are clear and set to enroll, so Keith Allain was able to break down the class. Here's the link to my Register article that ran today.

A couple of additional notes: Yale is still planning on two games in Arizona this January, but the Arizona Coyotes are working on a two-day, four-team tournament at the NHL arena. Two more opponents are working to shift things around in order to attend. If all works out, the tournament will be Friday and Sunday, with the Coyotes playing a home game on Saturday night. If not, Yale would simply play two games against Arizona State, at least one expected to be at Gila River Arena.

Allain said he's very close to finalizing a replacement for assistant coach Dan Muse, who departed for the Chicago Steel of the USHL a couple weeks ago.
Nelson Gadoury could be the seventh, but that has yet to be decided. Here's the story I wrote in today's Register detailing the new class.

Quick future scheduling note for Quinnipiac: in addition to a game with Arizona State at High Point Solutions Arena on Oct. 15, the Sun Devils will return to Hamden in 2016-17 for a two-game set. Quinnipiac travels to Tempe, Ariz. for two games the following season.
A broken fibula sidelined Anthony Day until the ECAC playoffs. Nico Weberg and Alex Ward combined to play just 11 games before injuries ended their seasons. Goaltender Connor Wilson saw no action, stuck behind the best goaltender in the country.

The Bulldogs will replenish with seven recruits. Four forwards, two defensemen and a goalie will fill the holes left by the departed (Killian arrived as a defensemen, but transitioned to forward.)

Here's the new class.

Won USA Hockey U-18 national championship with Hartford Junior Wolfpack earlier this month in Buffalo, a team coached by ex-Quinnipiac skater Scott Robson and Doug Messier, father of Mark Messier.Chip Malafrontehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16434685563004301748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488763221291965438.post-46839671772688212812015-04-11T07:17:00.001-04:002015-04-11T07:17:34.160-04:00Alex Lyon, Rob O'Gara to return next season

The Bruins wanted Rob O'Gara now. Alex Lyon is still receiving interest. Both will be back in New Haven next season. The story:

NEW HAVEN >> Alex Lyon’s numbers were second to none, yet
he lost out on the Mike Richter Award as the nation’s top goaltender
earlier Friday. But Yale’s rising star would get his due later in the
afternoon, named an All-American along with teammate Rob O’Gara.

Perhaps the best news of the day for Yale? Their coach, Keith
Allain, confirmed both will put off the NHL and return to school in the
fall.

Lyon, a sophomore, and O’Gara, a junior defenseman, were named
first-team All-Americans by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The
announcement came during a ceremony at Matthews Arena in Boston, part
of the Frozen Four weekend’s festivities.

Lyon is Yale’s first first-team All-American goalie since Mike
O’Neill in 1989. Alex Westlund was the last Yale goalie to be so
honored, as a second-team pick in 1998. O’Gara is the first Bulldog
All-American defenseman since Ray Giroux was selected to the first team
in 1998.

North Dakota goaltender Zane McIntyre won the Richter Award, and
was also a first-team All-American, despite Lyon leading the country in
goals-against average (1.62), save percentage (.939) and shutouts (7).
That wasn’t surprising, if only because McIntyre was the lone goaltender
named Hobey Baker finalist last month.

Still, it’s hard to argue another goalie more valuable to their
team than Lyon, who’d already won the Ken Dryden Award winner as the
ECAC’s most outstanding goalie.

“The big thing was his consistency,” Allain said. “You knew what
you were going to get every day at practice, every weekend going into
games. He has the right combination of physical ability, mental
toughness and hockey sense. To me, that’s why he’s a really good
goalie.”

O’Gara, the ECAC’s top defensive defenseman, was also Yale’s
second-leading scorer with 21 points. He entered the year with 18 career
points over two seasons.

“Rob epitomizes what we want to be about as a program, and that’s
growth,” Allain said. “He was a contributor as a freshman, was much
better as a sophomore, and during the last half of this year was a
dominant player. He was better in every aspect of the game.”

Both players opened the eyes of NHL suitors this winter. O’Gara, a
fifth-round draft pick of the Boston Bruins in 2011, certainly appeared
ready for the next level, something Allain sensed by Christmas break.

“We sat down and I just wanted to get him ready for the fact that
Boston would probably try to sign him,” Allain said. “We talked about a
lot of things. He wants to get his degree; his parents want him to get
his degree. I said that’s good, put you have to be in position to say no
to something you want, so you have to get your mind ready for that.
Boston was good about it. They approached him. But they like the
situation he’s in; he’s getting better. The opportunity was there if he
wanted to leave, but there was never any pressure put on him to do so.”

Lyon, an undrafted free agent, has received interest from
multiple clubs. He’s committed to Yale next season, but may face a
difficult choice at this time next year.

Allain spent the week conducting year-end individual meetings and
evaluations with his team. Yale returns nearly its entire roster from a
team that led the country in scoring defense and nearly beat Boston
University in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

With O’Gara and Lyon in tow, the Bulldogs should be early
favorites to win the ECAC and in the conversation for national
championship honors.

“I’m really pleased for both of those guys,” Allain said.
“They’re great players and great people who work extremely hard at their
sport. They’ve earned the right to be All-Americans. It’s fantastic.”
Over the Boards first reported the news via Twitter.

The identical twin brothers, listed at 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, were productive in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League last winter and the Ontario Junior Hockey League before that, but neither cracked the lineup for the Bobcats this season.

Quinnipiac, which had planned to bring in six freshmen next season, will likely expand its recruiting class to fill the two additional full scholarship roster spots.

First, the Rivalry on Ice game at Madison Square Garden has been put on hold. Yale is still interested in playing Harvard at the Garden in a third regular season game, just not annually. The Bulldogs would like to hold the event every other season or perhaps every third season.

Also gone is the post-Christmas exhibition game with the Russian Red Stars, who won't be making a U.S. tour this year for the first time in six years.

Yale will once again open with Princeton, a non-league game, as part of the tournament formerly known as the Liberty Hockey Invitational. But that event has a new sponsor and a new location. Trenton's Sun National Bank Center, with its hockey capacity of 7,605. The first two installments of the tournament had been at Newark's Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils.

Here's the non-league schedule to date:

Exhibition with the University of New Brunswick at Ingalls Rink, date to be determined between Oct. 23-25.
Oct. 30: vs. Princeton at Trenton, N.J.
Oct. 31: vs. Maine or Vermont at Trenton, N.J.
Nov. 28: at Providence
Dec. 11: Boston University
Jan. 5: at UMass

Yale is also close to finalizing a two-year, four-game deal with Arizona State that would include a two-game set in Tempe, Ariz. on Jan. 8-9 and two games in New Haven in 2016-17. The contract is expected to be completed by next week.

Arizona State, one of the nation's best club teams, will begin its elevation to Division I status in the fall by playing a mix of club and Division I competition. By 2016-17, the Sun Devils will play as a D-I independent, expected to join a conference by the following season.

Yale had planned on participating in a tournament in Las Vegas that also included Arizona State. Organizers were forced to postpone the event, leaving the Bulldogs with two open dates, kick-starting talks with Arizona State.

The Bulldogs are also working on filling the void left by the Russians with a second exhibition (classified as a scrimmage, per NCAA rules.)Chip Malafrontehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16434685563004301748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488763221291965438.post-62260316920102431282015-03-30T15:26:00.000-04:002015-03-30T15:34:16.188-04:00Quinnipiac: a look ahead to 2015-16Quinnipiac schedule for next fall will once again include a heavy dose of Hockey East opponents. There was a time when Rand Pecknold would take his team anywhere to play anyone. Now that the Bobcats have established themselves as a perennial NCAA contender, he's content to keep his non-conference slate contained to the New England, with an occasional trip to the Midwest.

Here's are the 12 non-conference games on tap for next season. Dates won't be announced until a later date.
He'll miss Friday's semifinal game with Harvard and, should the Bobcats advance, the championship game on Saturday.

It's an injury that is expected to take several weeks for recovery, meaning Anas is unlikely to play in the first round of the NCAA tournament, though Quinnipiac is holding out hope for the slim chance he may be ready by next weekend.
Anas, the national rookie of the year as a freshman, has scored 23 of Quinnipiac's 103 goals this season.Chip Malafrontehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16434685563004301748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488763221291965438.post-89771060315385392722015-02-03T05:34:00.000-05:002015-02-03T05:34:04.900-05:00Alex Lyon named ECAC goalie of the week

Here's a few notes and quotes from some pre-practice interviews.

Yale learned one weekend can be a real momentum killer. Firing on all cylinders as it trekked up to God's country of upstate New York, and minutes away from starting the series with a Friday night win at St. Lawrence, the wheels fell off quickly. "I thought we played perfect protecting a one-goal third period lead," Keith Allain said. "(St. Lawrence) had nothing going, they had no life. We had numerous chances to extend the lead. We didn't, which was our failure. We took an offensive zone penalty with 3 minutes left in the game, we do a great job on the kill, and they score a bad, off-angle goal on their only shot of the power play with a minute left. It kind of stunned us, and they won the game in overtime."

A night later, Clarkson bottled up Yale for a period before the Bulldogs found some flow. Still, another tough goal, a bad bounce off a Bulldog skate, gave the Golden Knights a lead that served as the game's only score. "Again, I thought we could have easily won that game 1-0 if we just played the same way," Allain said. "It was one of those weekends."

Consistency in the offensive zone continues to hamper Yale, which appeared to have solved the issue with nine goals in two games with Harvard and Brown the week prior. Allain said there were several instances in which Yale skaters had opposing goaltenders of St. Lawrence and Clarkson clearly beaten, but failed to convert. "That's an area we have to get better at," Allain said.

Yale's normal routine was interrupted by this week's blizzard. Monday is a typical off day, but since the university issued a mandate nixing all activity for Tuesday, Allain and his staff scrambled the team together for an impromptu Monday practice session.

The offensive struggles extend to the Bulldog power play, with an 11 percent success rate is ranked 53rd of 59 teams. Yale's seven power play goals ranks ahead of only Brown. Allain continues to work and tweak the unit in practice every day. Mike Doherty says he's encouraged by the emerging chemistry on the power play units. "We're starting to find each other more and more each game," Doherty said. "We're not too down on it. We know how important they are each game, but as long as we keep making progress the goals will come."

Alex Lyon is opening many eyes around the league as he builds on a successful freshman campaign. Boasting a .937 save percentage in the final weekend of January will do that. Allain says its a product of Lyon's worth ethic, much of which comes in sessions with volunteer goaltending coach Josh Siembida. "He's become more consistent because I think he trusts his positioning a bit more. He lets some pucks hit him that before he felt he needed to make saves on. That part of his game has gotten better. And he'll continue to improve. He's certainly not a finished product yet."

Ingalls Rink is sold out (though a few tickets remain for Friday night's matchup with Princeton) and it should be a typical Hockey Haven atmosphere.

I dropped by Quinnipiac practice this morning, so here are some notes from that end. Yale practice is later this afternoon. We'll update then.

Quinnipiac is coming off a bye week, which allowed a flu bug to harmlessly pass through the locker room and give time for some injuries to heal. Eight players missed practice last weekend, but the team is almost at full strength.

Michael Garteig absorbed a hit at Merrimack on Jan. 16 forcing him to leave that game and miss the next night's game. He will be back in action this weekend. Defenseman Devon Toews, also injured in the Merrimack series, needs more time and is out this weekend.

Quinnipiac is in an interesting position. With a comfortable lead and positioned well in the ECAC standings, the Bobcats are behind league mates Harvard, Yale and Colgate in the Pairwise Rankings and currently on the outside of the NCAA tournament bubble. Yale's two losses in the North Country were a blow to its ECAC position (the Bulldogs are sixth, based on winning percentage) but still in decent shape with the PWR.

Tim Clifton's game has grown by leaps and bounds since last season. The sophomore's presence is felt at both ends of the ice, where he is third on the team with eight goals and has replaced Bryce Van Brabant as the Bobcats most physical forward. Coach Rand Pecknold said Clifton couldn't grasp Quinnipiac's penalty kill system a year ago, but has emerged as one of the team's most effective weapons on the PK. "Peca is our best forward (on the PK)," Pecknold said. "Timmy's probably second."

Pecknold also praised the massive jumps taken by second-year defensemen Derek Smith and Toews. Smith has also emerged as a strong penalty killer, spending time earlier this season at forward during the PK. Toews, drafted by the Islanders in June, has hit the weight room hard since arriving at Hamden. He's up close to 20 pounds since his Junior days and, like Smith, become a leader of the back end.

Quinnipiac, like Yale, struggles at Brown, just 0-3-2 over the last five seasons despite fielding some of its strongest teams ever. Is it any wonder? The atmosphere at Meehan Auditorium is on par with most mortuaries, and a far cry from the palpable electricity that runs through Ingalls Rink.

We'll rank this still young rivalry as one of the best in college hockey. The results on the ice since the very first meeting in 2006 have favored the Bobcats, who take a 13-6-3 record in 22 games into Saturday. That includes a 7-1-2 mark in the past 10, the last two coming via sweep in last March's ECAC quarterfinals. Of course, the one loss was the one that counted most, a 4-0 setback in the 2013 national title game in Pittsburgh.

Yale visited the nation's oldest active hockey arena on Tuesday, dropping a tough 3-2 decision at Northeastern's Matthews Arena. On Saturday, they'll take on Harvard in "The World's Most Famous Arena." A few notes from today's practice at Ingalls Rink. (Is it just me, or does Jesse Root look a little like Elvis in the above photo?)

The initial "Rivalry on Ice" contract was two years, but all signs indicate Yale and Harvard will continue to play a third regular season game. Keith Allain said he's blocked off a date on next year's non-conference schedule, and that the Crimson have done the same. Harvard, Yale and the firm promoting the game, the Leverage Agency, plan to meet soon to discuss the financial viability of MSG. As of this afternoon, ticket sales were over 11,000, about 2,000 behind where sales on this date last year. Still, a projected crowd of 13,000 should bode well for continuing the game. "I'd like to see it stay on the docket, even if it's not an annual event," Allain said.

Yale took a quick 2-0 lead in the first period at Northeastern, but the overall performance was not nearly the same level as an impressive win over Vermont three days prior. "I don't think we played particularly well on Tuesday. But I'm pleased with the way we've progressed after the break," Allain said. "I'm chalking Tuesday's game up to fatigue. We took yesterday off, and the group seems feeling good about themselves."

Yale will practice at Ingalls Rink Friday and head into the city that evening because the Garden won't have ice until Saturday night. Billy Joel plays there Friday night (Allain is looking for two tickets, if you're looking to unload any) and the Knicks will play (excuse me, lose) to the Hornets Saturday afternoon.

Allain is holding out hope that injured forwards Anthony Day, Tim Bonner and Nico Weberg will be back by season's end.

Had a chance to speak with freshman defenseman Nate Repensky for a story running in the paper tomorrow. He overcame a broken fibula and ankle ligament damage last spring, slowly working his way back into hockey shape, and is now being used on special teams.

Mark Messier, Mike Richter and George Pataki will again drop the ceremonial first puck at MGS on Saturday.

Boston University freshman Jack Eichel is the team captain. Defenseman Will Butcher, a sophomore at Denver, is the other alternate captain.

The U.S. has wins over Boston University and Germany in exhibitions leading into the World tournament, set to begin Dec. 26 in Toronto and Montreal. The U.S. plays Sweden today in the last tune-up leading into the opener against Finland in Montreal, to be televised live (3 p.m.) by the NHL Network.
Sources indicated Lemire's decision was based on his interest in regular playing time. The junior forward had played in only 21 career games for the Bobcats, four this season, and has no career points.

UMass Boston, a member of the Division III ECAC East, is off to a 10-0 start under the direction of ex-UConn assistant Peter Belisle.

Lemire, a Townsend, Massachusetts resident, was an ECAC All-Academic selection but was unable to crack the lineup with any consistency. He saw no action as a freshman, played in 17 games last winter and four of the Bobcats 16 games this season.
John Hayden, a sophomore forward, was named to the U.S. roster earlier this week. There are still seven cuts looming after the team convenes in Boston Dec. 16, but Allain, a three-time head coach of the U.S. entry, thinks Hayden is well positioned to make the final roster.

"I think he’s got a really good chance," Allain said. "They’ve got a role
for him, and they understand what he’s going to be, and they know him as a
player really well."

Hayden didn't make the preliminary roster last December after being invited to the team's summer training camp. He's determined to make the final roster.

"This has been a goal of mine a long time, to make this team," Hayden said. "Summer camp went well, I had good chemistry with those guys, and I'm looking forward to Boston. Hearing my name is on that roster is very special to me. I want to prove I belong on that team."

Allain has coached in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Olympics, the IIHF World Championships, the World Cup of Hockey and the NCAA playoffs. He says none compare to the World Junior Championships, which he calls the "greatest hockey tournament in the world." That the event is essentially a week-long national holiday in Canada only adds to the atmosphere. And Allain is every bit as excited as Hayden at the opportunity to play in front of sold-out crowds in the NHL arenas of Montreal and Toronto, if that's possible.

"I'd like nothing more for him than to have that experience. I
was thrilled Dan Muse was an assistant the last two teams. I talked to him before the
first year, and I said I can’t describe it to you, but I’m telling you…because you're
immersed in it and you’re with this group of 30 people and you become a family
in like two days and you’re doing everything together and everything is about
the tournament and the team and its just really unique."

A few other notes from Yale as it prepares for RPI on Friday and Union on Saturday, a meeting of the past two NCAA champions.

** Scoring goals hasn't been an issue since Allain took over at Yale. So the 2.11 goals-per game through nine games is concerning. Allain feels the Bulldogs are vastly improved since a flat loss to St. Lawrence on Nov. 15. "I think, really, from my perspective, if we field passes a little cleaner that'll give us the split second we need to get a better shot off. I just think our precision passing is getting better but its not as good as it needs to be to score goals."

** Scoring is down across the ECAC. Yale, at 2.11 goals-per game, is scoring less than it did during a 5-25-2 season of 2004-05 (2.19). Still, it ranks sixth in the league in scoring offense, better than Cornell, Clarkson, RPI, Princeton, Brown, all under two goals-per game. "I think our record right now, you can't be upset with how we're doing," Yale forward Carson Cooper said. "You always want to be doing better, you want to score more. But the way our defense is coming around, that's something to be proud of. Hopefully we can get the scoring coming, but we have been scoring and winning games."

** Indeed, team defense and goaltending is as strong as ever. The start to Alex Lyon's sophomore campaign has been brilliant. Patrick Spano, in his first start of the season, shut out RIT. Having multiple, extremely capable goaltenders presents some challenges. "Making sure everyone feels valuable and are contributing to the team," Allain said. "And keeping guys fresh so when you need them they are able to perform. Those are challenges. But the benefits certainly outweigh any challenges it may present."

** The main challenges for Yale have been dealing with injuries. Anthony Day, Nico Weberg and Tim Bonner have missed multiple games. Allain doesn't get into specifics, but acknowledged there are a couple of players who won't be back any time soon. Dealing with adversity is part of the game. "Everyone has to deal with stuff, and that's why we don't talk about it much," Allain said. "Whether it's guys banged up or the ref makes a bad call or our goalie lets in a bad goal. Whatever the situation may be, that's the way it's supposed to be. Figure it out."
